Formed in 1969 as Thorn Creek Preservation Association, Friends of Thorn Creek Woods (Friends) is the citizen-activist group responsible for preserving the 985 acre Thorn Creek Woods Nature Preserve.
The preserve began with just a handful of Park Forest neighbors who gathered together and looked across the street from their homes and saw something wild, something unique and something worth fighting for. Thanks to their efforts, generations since and generations to come are able to come here and see the very same thing.
Volunteers from the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) helped build the preserve in 1975 and 1976.
